While Dubrovnik is known as the “pearl of the Adriatic”, this city is also home to glistening, multi-colored gems. Hidden on the idyllic island of Koločep are some of the most spectacular sea caves along the Adriatic coast — the Blue Cave and the Three Green Caves. Only accessible by swimming, these caves make for an unmissable adventure.
At Rewind Dubrovnik, we’re thrilled to share these natural wonders with guests during our Private Dubrovnik Boat Tours. In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know about these sea caves and how you can visit them with Rewind Dubrovnik. Keep reading for our insights, and feel free to contact us with any questions about our trips.

The Iconic Blue Cave in Dubrovnik
The Blue Cave on Koločep Island is a dazzling beauty known for its glowing turquoise water, created by sunlight filtering through the cave’s entrance. As the light reflects off the seabed, it gives the water a surreal, glowing blue hue — hence the name.
However, it’s not the only Blue Cave in Croatia. Another one, also known as the Blue Grotto, is located on Bisevo Island near Vis. Koločep Island forms part of the Elaphiti Islands, and its Blue Cave is much more easily accessible from Dubrovnik. You can even visit it as part of our Private 2-Hour Swim, Snorkel & Cave Tour from Dubrovnik!
The Blue Cave can only be reached by boat, and only entered by swimming. The crystal-clear water is perfect for snorkeling, allowing you to immerse yourself in the vibrant light and swim among the fish. While it gets busy here, it’s far less crowded than the Blue Cave on Bisevo and is a tranquil escape from bustling Dubrovnik.

The Three Green Caves in Croatia
When people refer to the Green Cave in Croatia, they’re often surprised to learn that Koločep is home to not just one, but three distinct green caves, each with its own unique charm. These sea caves are the lesser-known sister of the Blue Cave, and get their name from the emerald hue of the water, caused by sunlight filtering through layers of rock.
Each cave ranges in size, with the widest one being the most accessible. There are plenty of fish swimming here, so make sure to bring a snorkel! The second cave is narrower and is not recommended for the claustrophobic. The third cave is known as the “dark” cave for the lack of light, and is both eerie and mystical. While swimming here, make sure to pay attention to your skipper’s guidance to help you navigate the caves.

Best Time to Visit the Blue and Green Caves
The best time to explore the Blue and Green Caves is from May to October, when the sea is warm and weather conditions are ideal. From morning to midday, around 10 am to 2 pm, the colors in the cave are at their most vibrant due to the higher sun.
However, these times are also when the caves will be at their busiest. Peak season in Dubrovnik is summer, between the months of June and August. If you visit in the shoulder season or time your boat tour for slightly earlier or later in the day, you can still experience the caves at their best without the crowds.
